Heat Pumps

Lower Costs and Secure a 20-Year Income Stream

Air and ground source heat pumps attract substantial Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments, and their outstanding efficiencies mean significant fuel savings. They are an ideal heating solution for many domestic and commercial buildings and applications, either replacing or working alongside existing heating systems. Properly specified and installed, your heat pump can provide clean, low-cost heat, a payback period under 3 years and a significant new revenue stream for 20 years.

How Heat Pumps Work

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) are a popular and cost-effective option for many homes. You already have a heat pump in your home – your fridge. It absorbs heat from inside the fridge and expels it to the exterior of the unit. An ASHP uses the same technology but runs in reverse, taking heat from the outside air, concentrating that energy and using it to provide space heating and hot water inside your home.

  • Ambient air is pulled into evaporator by electric fan

  • Air heats liquid refrigerant in the evaporator, changing it from liquid to gas

  • This gas is compressed by electric compressor, significantly increasing temperature

  • Hot gas passed through a condenser, transferring heat to water to be used in the home

  • Gas passes through expansion valve to cool and start process again

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) Ground source heat pumps utilise a very similar process to air source heat pumps but collect heat from the ground instead of the air. The ground absorbs solar energy from sunlight and rain. In the UK, the ground absorbs enough solar energy to maintain a year-round temperature of around 8-12 °C.

  • Water/antifreeze mix pumped through ground in heat absorbing ground array pipes

  • Ambient heat flows from warmer ground into cooler liquid, warming liquid to ground temperature

  • Heat exchanger transfers this heat to refrigerant, which boils and turns into gas

  • Compressor increases gas pressure, greatly increasing temperature

  • Heated gas flows into condenser, transferring heat to water for space heating and domestic hot water

  • Gas cools, returns to liquid and passes through expansion valve for process to start again
